Bacterial Vaginosis - Symptoms

Causes of menopausal related hot flashes / flushes

Against prevailing thought, research does NOT generally support the idea that hot flashes are correlated with LOW circulating estrogen levels

A hot flash is triggered by the hypothalamus (located in the front of the brain).   Releases body heat that has built up in response to a surge in the catecholamine stress hormones, NOREPINEPHRINE and/or EPINEPHRINE (aka. ADRENALINE).

Changes affecting the balance between certain hormones begin the cascade that initiates a hot flash.   E.g. high or low CORTISOL levels (note that CORTISOL levels reflect the weighted average of recent ADRENALINE levels), low SEROTONIN, estrogen dominance over PROGESTERONE:

Estrogen Dominance

-   In aging and menopause PROGESTERONE levels fall faster than estrogen.    Estrogen levels in women whose ovaries are no longer functioning will remain at approximately 40% of their former levels. This is because most women continue to produce estrogen by conversion of androgens (derived from the adrenal gland) into estrogen in the fat cells. However, PROGESTERONE levels drop to less than 1% of their former levels, significantly increasing the ratio of estrogen to PROGESTERONE:

-   Chronic stress can deplete PROGESTERONE by dysregulating the HPA (Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal) axis.   As the ovaries produce less PROGESTERONE approaching menopause, the responsibility for PROGESTERONE production shifts to the adrenal glands, which with added stress can prove too much for them
