How to choose good 'cod liver oil' for Omega-3

Low-Heat Processed Cod (or other fish) Liver Oil

ABOUT Cod Liver Oil

If you choose cod liver oil as your daily Omega-3 supplement, it should be a quality, low-heat processed (undamaged), high-vitamin Cod liver oil;

Cod liver oil (CLO) contains vitamins A and D - CLO contains a little less EPA/DHA than concentrated fish oil, but quality, high vitamin CLO takes center-stage for its high content of the very necessary A and D vitamins, which are sadly deficient in many people.

Vitamin A

• Absorbs minerals

• Builds muscle

• Utilizes water-soluble vitamins and protein Aids good eyesight

Vitamin D

• Needed for strong bones

• Precursor to the sex hormones

• Used by virtually every cell in the body

–    Fish and animal livers contain the highest level of vitamin A - Since most people choose not to eat animal liver on a daily basis, then taking a daily supplement of a fish liver oil is one other way to ensure critical vitamin A;

–    Deep-water cod get their vitamin D content by indirectly eating phytoplankton - which absorb sunlight in surface waters. Phytoplankton is a tiny, plant-like organism drifting freely on the water's surface, which utilizes nutrients from the water and captures energy from the sun by photosynthesis. Rich in EPA/DHA, phytoplankton is eaten by zooplankton, which is eaten by other fish, which are themselves eaten by cod.

New Heat-PROCESSED-free Cod or Skate liver Oil processing Method

Introduced By David Wetzel of Green Pastures®

Fermentation –this is the latest, technically controlled process, based on the traditional method of allowing cod livers to sit in a barrel in the sun until the oil naturally separates and floats to the top. Green Pastures® uses a proprietary natural lacto-fermentation and cleaning method, that DO NOT USE HEAT, to produce a toxin-free oil. The age-old fermentation process is considered to increase the oil's nutrient concentration and bio-availability. The oil is believed to be high in vitamin K2, which protects heart and brain function and moves calcium to where it should be in the body - out of the arteries and into the bones.

Currently, Green Pastures®offers both cod and skate liver oils, in liquid and capsule form. Dr. Rons cod liver oil is Green Pastures® oil.

IN SUMMARY - Properties of a good cod (or other fish) liver oil

In summation - a cod liver oil supplement ideally needs to be:

–   From a clean, “bible-source”fish (i.e. with fins and scales);

–   Free of toxins (such as pcbs, mercury, dioxins) and lipid peroxides (oxidized fatty acids capable of producing damaging free radicals), and independently tested to verify purity;

–   Minimally processed - to retain the integrity of the easily damaged omega-3 fatty acids and to prevent lipid peroxidation:

✔  Processed in the absence of light, air or heat below 320°F (temp. at which trans fats begin to form)

✔  Not molecularly distilled (which uses temps. higher than 392°F (temp. at which trans fats begin to form substantially);

✔  Not destearinated or processed using solvents or bleach

–   High in NATURALVitamin A and D absolutely necessary to be able to absorb minerals; Since natural vitamins A and D are so critical to health, and are not easily obtainable in the diet, it makes sense to choose a fish oil supplement containing both quality EPA/DHA and high-level vitamins A and D. REGULARcod liver oil contains less than half the vitamin A, and only a sixth of the vitamin D, with a 25 to 1 ratio of A to D instead of the more ideal 10 to 1.

✔  Vitamin A - around 10,000 IU per teaspoon (5000ml). Avoid Synthetic Vitamin Additions

✔ Vitamin D – around 1,000 IU per teaspoon (5000ml).

Exception for Sun-Lovers: If you spend extensive amounts of time in the sun with skin exposed, then you should opt for a cod liver oil having low vitamin A content.

–   Preferably high in Omega-3 EPA and DHA to ensure approximately 500mg each of EPA and DHA, in a reasonably-sized daily dose. In addition to the fish liver oils, oily fish such as sardines, herring, mackerel, anchovies, menhaden and wild salmon contain high EPA /DHA;

–   Able to pass a taste test - that will not deter anyone from taking the oil on a daily basis. Capsules are sometimes available, but usually require taking a lot for an equivalent liquid dose;

–   Fresh and Properly Stored – in a dark glass bottle. Fresh fish or cod liver oil does not have much of a taste or smell. The horrible tasting cod liver oil you may remember taking in the past, was most likely rancid;

–   Independently Tested Toxin Free –All fish oils in the U.S. must be tested according to protocols of the Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC) and approved free of detectable levels of 32 contaminants before they can be imported into this country. The European Union (E.U.) also has similar stringent testing. Reputable fish and cod liver oil processors voluntarily submit their oils for independent testing. To minimize potential for contaminants, fish oil production needs to begin with fish low on the food chain, from unpolluted waters;

–   Stored in nitrogen-flushed Bottles – to remove air, thus protecting unopened oil from oxidation.

CLO Supplementation Tips

–    Typical CLO dose 1 tsp/day - you should not take more than 1 tablespoon CLO per day

–   Vitamin A -the requirement is around 5,000 IU (child), 10,000 IU (> 12 yrs), 20,000 IU (pregnant) /day.This need is met by an appropriate dose of high-vitamin CLO (1 tsp/day for a non-pregnant adult).;

–   Vitamin D -the MINIMAL daily requirement of vitamin D should be ~ 4,000 I.U. from all sources, rather than the woefully deficient suggested RDA of 200-400 I.U.Ideally we should be going out in the sun, but depending on the brand, the vitamin D in cod liver oil at least supplies some of our vitamin D. Vitamin D also protects the oil from oxidation.

–    Vitamin E (400 IU) –   when taking fish, cod liver it is especially important to take 400 IU Natural Vitamin E to control the oxidation rate of EFAs in the body. This is usually bought as d-alpha tocopherol (not synthetic dl-alpha tocopherol) or mixed tocopherols and is best bought from a store with a fast stock-turnover to ensure freshness. Eg. Sams, Costco, Walmart.The beneficial, active nature of EFAs, which when sitting in the cell membrane attracts oxygen to the cell,also makes them vulnerable to free radical-producing oxidation. To protect this inherent, potential energy-producing benefit we need to ensure an adequate, balancing amount of antioxidants, of which Vitamin E is renowned for its ability to counter lipid peroxidation. The best, most natural form of vitamin E (called Gamma-tocopherol ) is found in food, and is abundant in nuts such as walnuts and pecans.

–    Capsules vs. Liquid

✔ Liquid

A number of natural health professionals consider that taking a quality liquid oil produces superior results compared to taking capsules

Much less expensive than capsules

Unflavored cod liver oil, in particular, doesn't taste great, but taking it by the following method reduces unpleasantness of the ordeal

▲  How to take liquid Cod Liver Oil – Remember to give the bottle a shake; Most offerings have an added natural flavor, such as lemon, orange, cinnamon or mint to improve taste.

1. Put about 1 tsp. of CLO on a spoon (a dessertspoon is about right)

2. Hold your breath and take oil from spoon

3. Immediately chase with a ready-and-waiting drink of water

✔ Capsules – for those who can't handle the liquid oil

Protect oil from oxygen;

Protect user from its taste!

To get a useful dose requires taking several capsules

Capsules are 3-4 times the cost of liquid
