Fibrocystic Disease of the Breast (FDB)

–    Iodine deficiency in the breasts --

Cysts, Nodules, Scar tissue, Enlargement, Tenderness and Fibrocystic Disease of the Breast (FDB) - it is generally believed that FDB results from the excess number of cells that grow in the breast during the menstrual cycle as a result of hormonal stimulation. To keep the cell count steady, some cells have to be removed each month.

 

–    Iodine therapy resolves nearly every case of breast cysts - Iodine is the trigger mechanism that promotes appropriate cell death (apoptosis). Leftover cells that have not been appropriately destroyed build up over repeated menstrual cycles and cause the lumps, soreness, and larger lesions of fibrocystic disease.

 

–   In the 1920's, 3% of American women had FDB, today that rate has increased to ~90%(of these women, 40% are unaware they have it, which is only detected by biopsy) - The longer FDB is present in the breast, the higher the potential risk for development of breast cancer. The breasts concentrate iodine when available, and use iodine as much or more than the thyroid. Several studies have demonstrated a relationship between low iodine intake and fibrocystic disease of the breast (FDB), both in women and laboratory animals. A sufficiency of iodine eliminates the excess cells, enabling the breast to return to its normal resting state as the fibrocystic disease slowly disappears from the breast.

Ovarian / Thyroid Cysts / PCOS

–    Iodine shrinks ovarian and thyroid cysts by reducing estrogen production - Iodine can be concentrated in the ovaries, and Russian studies of some years ago showed a relationship between iodine deficiency and the presence of ovarian cysts. The greater the iodine deficiency, the more ovarian cysts a woman produces. In its extreme form, this condition is known as polycystic ovarian disease (PCOS).

Skin cysts

–    Rubbing Lugol's iodine solution into the skin over the cyst is recommended (even more effective if combined with DMSO);

Cancer

Absence of iodine in a tissue allows cysts to grow and may eventually lead to cancer – iodine induces apoptosis (naturally programmed cell death), a process:

–   Essential to growth and development - E.g. Fingers form in the fetus by apoptosis of the tissue between them;

–   Destroying cells that represent a threat to the integrity of the organism –E.g. cancer cells and virus-infected cells.

 

The iodolipid δ-Iodolactone is the main mediator for preventing cancer - this iodinated form of lactone (produced when iodide oxidizes lipids, such as lactone) seems to be the main iodolipid which can inhibit growth and induce apoptosis in human thyroid carcinoma cell lines (B-CPAP cells, FTC-133 cells and 8505C cells) as well as on human breast cancer cells (MCF 7).

Also, human lung cancer cells with genes spliced into them that enhance iodine uptake and utilization undergo apoptosis and shrink when given iodine, both in vitro and implanted in mice.

Heart Problems

Cardiovascular disease / High cholesterol

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is primarily caused by either or both of:

–   Arteriosclerosis - hardening of the arteries due to calcium deposits;

–   Atherosclerosis - oxidantdamage to weakened vascular walls (specifically, weakened connective tissue). The body uses lipoprotein (a) as a temporary repair-patch. Lp(a) is a sticky constituent of arterial plaque, responsible for attracting platelets, calcium and fibrin circulating in the blood, but when over-utilized can lead to excessive clotting, atherosclerosis / high cholesterol and vascular disease.

Cardiovascular Disease

 

Iodine treatment can reverse high levels of lipoprotein (a) -normalizing serum cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Resolving an iodine deficiency, provides iodine to increase thyroid hormone, which strengthens connective tissue. Atrial Fibrillation / Arrhythmias

The body needs adequate stores of iodine for the heart to beat smoothly and iodine supplementation may be the answer to many heart arrhythmia cases -especially atrial fibrillation.Dietary clinician Bruce West was able to completely resolve most of the stubborn cases of cardiac arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation that were resistant to correction with cardiac protocols, by adding adequate supplies of iodine to the protocol:

Amiodarone, the most popular medically prescribed anti-arrhythmic drug contains iodine, but is toxic - Amiodarone, is actually iodine in a toxic, sustained-release form (Amiodarone has a long half-life of 100 days, and contains 75 mg iodine / 200 mg tablet releasing 9 mg iodine daily in patients ingesting the recommended amount).This drug can produce a smooth heartbeat when the body has accumulated about 1.5g of iodine - i.e. the same amount of iodine retained by your body by high-dose iodine supplementation at fulfillment level. However, the side effects of Amiodarone are often too great (even life-threatening) for most people to endure long enough to achieve a normal heartbeat, and once you stop this drug, your original problem returns.Iodine therapy, on the other hand, fulfills the body's needs safely, and then maintains the smooth heartbeat with a low-maintenance dose.

Warning: You can NOT use iodine therapy concurrently with taking the drug Amiodarone, which could cause a dangerous iodine overload.

Amiodarone causes some people to become hypothyroid - structurally similar to thyroid hormones, Amiodarone interferes with the peripheral conversion of T4 to T3, such that 10-15% of patients on Amiodarone become hypothyroid.

Iodine destroys single-celled microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa, by denaturing their membrane proteins.

–    Iodine reacts with the amino acids tyrosine and/or histidine showing on the outer membranes of the microbes - This simple chemical reaction causes the protein that these amino acids are attached to, to stop functioning properly. As with all halogens, iodine is less effective against cryptosporidia.

–   Only iodine (the oxidized state) not iodide (the reduced state) has antiseptic and antibacterial properties
