Reduce, Simplify, Eliminate

1. Reduce before organizing - an organized closet crammed full of stuff is still a closet crammed full of stuff. Throw out all the things you don't love and use and then you probably don't need to organize!

2. Write it down immediately - to saveyour mind carrying around the things you need to remember. Carry a small pocket notebook wherever you go.

3. Have only ONE inbox & process/empty it on a regular basis - incoming/outgoing mail, must-reads, must-pays, must call-abouts, must deal-withs, phone message slips, post-it notes and so on. Instead of landing them on the kitchen side, the fridge door, in your pocket, on the desk --- all over the place, have just one inbox, and put all incoming stuff in there. Then, once a day or once a week process the inbox to empty.

4. A place for everything - Have only ONE place for your car keys and you'll never lose them again. Where do your pens go? How about your magazines? The same for information - have ONE place to put all your information.

5. Put it away - now and in its place -to prevent things getting messy and disorganized. This takes only a few seconds, and will save cleaning, sorting and organizing later.

6. Clean as you go - its easier to clean things as you work and move through your day than to let them pile up for a big cleaning session later. E.g. in the kitchen - try to wash your dishes as you use them, and wipe the counter, instead of leaving a huge mess.

7. Develop routines to prevent things becoming disorganized and cluttered again - this involves specific procedures done at a set interval. E.g. Monday is washing day; Deal with inbox on Tuesday night;

Grasp the big picture

You need a firm grasp of your vision - Whether you're managing a project, running a company, or handling your day-to-day schedule, (i.e. the big picture). Furthermore, you need to be able to articulate your vision to others with clarity and ease and encourage them to find ways to support it, not fight it. When we're not clear about our vision, we waste time, feel perplexed and confused, and start to lose focus.

Have clear priorities

Your priorities grow naturally out of your vision - by knowing what's important and doing only that. If you then find yourself falling behind on your goals, you don't have to look far to find the problem, which is usually that you have lost control of your time because you stopped minding your priorities.

Daily discipline

Time is possibly man's most valuable finite resource - squander it, and it's gone. Adhering to a daily schedule led by your vision and run by your priorities is a sure path to personal freedom and health. Since most of us find this difficult to accomplish and in fact resist doing it, we will later pay the price - many serious diseases are stress-related.

To compile your List of Things to Do Today, Ask yourself 3 questions:

1. Is this something I could delegate or eliminate?

2. Is there a way to do this in much less time?

3. Will this truly make my life better, richer or fuller?

To help you establish priorities each day - you need to economize by doing fewer things overall, but ensure that the things you choose to do have more importance.

Highlight the most important tasks - i.e. essential to your long-term personal “Master Plan”(The Big Picture). Start by doing those.

To choose between two priorities - Ask "Of the two, which one will be more important to me at the end of my life?"

Use Pareto's Law - 20% of the things we do achieve 80% of what we want. So ask, "Which of the tasks before me are among that 20%?"

The Gold, Vapor, Acid Rule - Just about any activity fits into one of these three categories. It's up to you how much Gold, Vapor, and Acid you are going to have in your life.

Gold (best choices) - the ones that can improve you

Vapor (neutral choices - the ones that will just help you pass the time

Acid (worst choices) - the ones that can damage you in some way
