Research has found that a mother, with all her protective antibodies (anti-germs), passes her immunity on to her breast-fed baby. Conversely, a non breast-fed baby has no antibodies until the baby makes its own, relying on being in a sterile environment for the first month of life.
A breast-fed baby could not directly absorb the antibodies directly from the mother's milk, since antibodies are living protein cells and the body would simply use it as food.
